Footy is Back at The Den

Round 1 2025 Recap

It was a big opening round for the Wolves to kick off 2025. It started on Friday night with our first ever under 8 girls team playing against Ferny Grove at the Den. Both our u11 and u9 girls teams played away on Friday at Wilston Grange. All of our junior girls teams did the club proud in the wet. Our u11 girls tackled like there was no tomorrow. They had a slow start but came into their own, keeping the Gorillas to only a couple of points in the 2nd half. Final Score: Wilston Grange 3-2-20 to Everton 1-1-7.

Our mixed junior teams all had home games on Saturday. Starting at 8am with our new Auskick Play superstars under the guidance of our Head of Coaching, Brad Bissett, we have 6 superstars teams this year. Thanks to Iona Tait for getting all of our superstars fitted out and ready to go for their first game. Our three under 8 mixed teams then hosted The Gap and Ferny Grove in the mud and slush on oval 2, while our under 9 teams hosted Wilston Grange and The Gap on the main oval. The junior games were completed with an outstanding effort by our under 10 mixed team against Zillmere on the main oval. Our u11 mixed team had a bye in Round 1.

On a big Sunday at The Den, all of our youth teams started the season at home. Our three under 13s team played in the heavy conditions on oval 2. The day on oval 2 started with an outstanding effort from our under 13 division 3 Girls Everton/Ferny Grove merged team who easily accounted for the Sandgate Hawks. This was followed by our under 13 division 3 mixed team. Made up of mostly bottom age players who are new to youth footy, the players worked hard against a bigger and stronger opposition in the Mayne Tigers. Game of the day finished off the proceeding on oval 2, with our under 13 division 2 mixed team taking on Pine Rivers. Trailing heavily at 3qtr time, the team came home like a freight train taking the points in a close encounter.

We hosted five matches on the main oval, starting with a great performance by our under 15 girls who dominated their match against Sandgate. Next up was our younger group of Ferny Grove/Everton under 15 division 4 boys who took on Redcliffe. The boys were outsized by the Redcliffe outfit but worked hard all game. Effort of the day goes to Beau Kemp, the smallest player on the ground, with an outstanding smother against the biggest Redcliffe player on the ground. Our division 3 Everton/Ferny Grove under15 boys then comfortable accounted for Morningside in an outstanding display of team footy. The day was finished off by two strong efforts by our under 17 boys and girls team. Both less experienced then their opponents with many players new to footy over the past couple of years. The under 17 boys showed what they are capable of in patches of really good footy but were overrun by Coorparoo. The girls starting slowly in the first half, but began to show promising signs in the 2nd half winning a lot more of the ball against Kenmore. A special mention to Velouria Tait who backed up a great game in the under 15 girls and played for our under 17 who were short for the day.
